Laptop Sometimes Not Turning On

I have a Toshiba laptop that will work fine without problems. However, at other times when I press the start button, I hear the fan come on and then it will not start at all. The screen is blank or black. The LED lights are good. I have opened the laptop and checked for any loose cables or connections. At times, I have had to try random stuff, like re-seating the RAM or removing the hard drive and reconnecting it. When I do things like this, the laptop will sometimes turn on and function normally. I am not sure what else to check. I did notice when I opened the laptop and removed the keyboard that one corner showed like if something had spilled onto the laptop. Could the keyboard be faulty and at times keep the laptop from turning on properly? When the laptop turns on properly, the keyboard works without any issues. Aside from what I have described, there are no beep codes or LED flash code indicators when the laptop does is not able to boot/turn on. It's like sometimes it works great and sometimes it does not.

Thanks for any insight!

Hello,

please remove the keyboard, connect an external USB keyboard (if you have one) to the laptop and try to use it. The laptop should power on with it's keyboard disconnected.

If this does work you will know that this is the faulty keyboard.

Clean all the suspected stuff from it with a White Spirit or any other stuff that is alcohol based.

If this is a faulty memory or memory slot resetting it will probably not help. Try to use just one memory module and see what happens.

What to Do?!

Thanks Remus! So as I mentioned, my Toshiba laptop P505D-S8007 was working great just a few days ago. It turned on without any problems. I did some Word processing and did Windows updates. It would shut down and start fine. But yesterday, in the morning I’d did not power up. Even today I am trying to get it going. It sounds like it is starting up and the fan starts and then stops. Then nothing. The screen is blank or black. I don’t know if anyone has encountered this type of problem. Any help!?

Do you see Toshiba logo on the screen. If you do not, swap memory modules or take one out, then try another one.

If you do see the Toshiba logo keep pressing the F2 key. It will bring up the BIOS settings. Find BIOS defaults option and load it. Restart the laptop.

These are key combinations that you may try:
F1, F2, F10, F12, ESC or DEL

Help!

Well...it did it again! My Toshiba has been working great for the past two days. Word processing and surfing the web and using YouTube. I just shut it down and it does not want to start up! Yesterday I went into the BIOS and did the default settings. The only thing I noticed afterwards was that the fan would turn on for 1 minute and then shut down for 1 minute and repeated the same on/off routine as I worked on it. Right now it won’t turn on or boot. I know it will turn on again, but I’d like to stop this crazy scenario. Anyone experience this?

How old is your laptop.

Hm

Yes, the keyboard may prevent from booting. Try boot without the keyboard. Also remove the battery and try working just with the adapter.

My laptop used to do just that.

Thanks!

Thanks for the input! I did remove the keyboard, but it did not start up. The laptop is 10 years old. It works great when it starts up or boot up! The screen is nice and clear the laptop works great, but when it starts up. Then it just does not start up & I try about 5 or 10 times until it comes on again. I wish I could just pinpoint the problem that is causing this situation, so I know where to focus and fix.

This can be many things:

faulty power on button
or faulty power on button cable
faulty capacitors on the motherboard
faulty battery
faulty power adapter
faulty hard drive - try starting without it
faulty memory - try different module
even if the laptop is not powered on there should be some voltage on the motherboard like 3.3V or 5V This needs to be checked with a multimeter.
And so on.

10 years is a solid age for a laptop, may be it deserves retirement.

Something Small
by: John

Ok guys! My Toshiba Laptop P505D-S8007 works like a charm when it turns on and performs awesome! However, when it does not boot up, there are only lights and then I press the power button and it goes sleep mode. Something small must be affecting the laptop to turn on properly like when it does turn on and it works. Anyone know what that one thing could be? I feel that it is a simple fix because like I said when it turns on it works great without any problems. I’ve checked the power button but it seems to be working fine.

Thanks - John

Hi,

did you check the laptop with an external monitor or a TV. May be this is inverter that sometimes does not work.

Ok, so from my previous work on my laptop I have noticed that when I disassemble it and reassemble the laptop turns on or boots and the display works and everything else work. Anyone ever experience this? I cannot see anything loose inside. I’ve disconnected and reconnected wires but I have noticed this happen...I have done this (disassembled) three times and each time I put it back together it turns on without any problems. Any insights?

Update - Toshiba Laptop
by: John

Ok, so I just did something. I removed the RAM from the laptop and replaced it with some new RAM. I removed 2 GB of RAM from each slot for a total of 4 GB. I replaced it with 1 GB RAM for each slot for a total of 2 GB. The operating system is also Windows 10 Pro running 32 bit. I just pressed the power button and it turned on without any issues! Yes!

Do you all think I had too much RAM installed since it’s running at 32 bit? Can someone clarify the workings with RAM using 32 bit and 64 bit. Originally, the laptop was configured with 4 GB RAM total and running Windows 7 Premium at 64 bit. The specs from the Toshiba website for my particular model mention the laptop can take up to 8 GB of RAM. It uses DDR2 RAM. What do you all think?

Should my laptop be using Windows 10 at 64 bit instead of 32 bit? Could that be the issue?

Looks like intermittent fault. Try external monitor and post a video on youtube for us to see what's happening.

Hi,

it does not matter, 64bit or 32bit - the laptop must power on with both.

If you have one RAM module faulty the laptop will not boot/start. This I think is the problem.

Hello! My Toshiba laptop turned on this morning! Yes! Everything works great! I am thinking based on what was said in the comments to my post that I probably had a bad RAM stick. Thanks again guys for your input - it helps! The one thing I noticed is that the fan comes on and off often. It comes if for 14 seconds and then stops for 42 seconds and repeats the process. Is this normal?

Thanks Remus!

Thanks John,

that fan behavior is probably normal.
Have you replaced a processor heat sink paste by any chance.
